Why wind matters more than people expect
A steady Kansas wind can catch a flat surface like a mattress, a mirror, or a large piece of cardboard and turn it into something genuinely hard to control on an open driveway or a truck ramp.
It is not just about dropping something. A gust at the wrong moment on a loading ramp is how a mover twists an ankle or a piece of furniture ends up scraped against a door frame.
What we load first
On a windy day, lightweight boxes and anything with a large flat surface go on the truck early and get strapped down rather than left staged in the yard or driveway.
Furniture with cushions or loose panels gets wrapped tighter than usual, since a loose blanket flapping in wind is both a nuisance and a way to lose grip mid carry.
We also keep the truck's rear door closed between loads more than we would on a calm day, partly for temperature and partly so wind is not working against the crew every time they walk up the ramp.
Timing around a front
Spring and early summer in Kansas can bring a storm front through with very little warning. We check the forecast the morning of a job and, if something is building, move the heaviest and most weather sensitive items earlier in the schedule.
A morning start is usually calmer than an afternoon one in the warmer months, so where a customer has flexibility, we will suggest starting earlier rather than later.
What customers can do
Secure anything loose in the yard or on a patio before the crew arrives, since wind can turn a lawn chair or a garbage can lid into a hazard near the truck.
If you have large mirrors, glass tabletops, or framed art, let us know ahead of time so we bring the right padding and plan the carry for a day when wind is a real factor rather than an afterthought.
When a day genuinely is not safe
Most windy days in Wichita are simply a planning problem, not a reason to stop. On the rare occasion conditions turn genuinely unsafe, high wind advisories or a storm actively moving through, we will call to talk through delaying part of the load rather than pushing through it.
